St. Rose Parish and School opened as the first African American school in Bay St. Louis in 1868. In 1926 the school was moved to property purchased by Father Baltes on Necaise Ave. The current structure was built in 1991 A major renovation effort was undertaken and affectionately titled “Re-Rooting and Re-Routing in Christ.” Hurricane Katrina’s eye destroyed most of Hancock County but spared St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church in 2005, inflicting only minor damage, and it became a hub for volunteer and restoration efforts in the community.
