471,504 individuals living in MS have a disability. Thousands are not receiving the proper medical care, and the majority is living far below the poverty line. Individuals with disabilities are unaware of the services available, the organizations offering, or how to apply. They are also socially isolated and severely lacking in the social capital that provides a sense of personal power and recovery benefits like stress and depression reduction that formal therapy could never give.
Why Disability Connection?
The Solution: Our Community Resource Education Program serves more than 30,000 individuals, and consists of many different aspects, all designed to educate and engage individuals with disabilities:
1. Free Community Events like the Arbor Day Run/Walk/Roll
, Art Ability Fair
, Mayor’s Health Fair
, and People with Disabilities/Disabled Veterans Job Fair
. 500 -1,500 participate in each event. 2. Other recreational opportunities like sports clinics
and deep sea fishing trips. 3. The Connection
, a nation-wide internet resource center with the specific Employment Resource section, provides information on thousands of organizations that serve individuals with disabilities across the nation. 4. The South Mississippi Gulf Coast Community Resource Guide
offers information on resources available to individuals experiencing unemployment and underemployment on the Gulf Coast. 5. Resource Specialists offer one-on-one assistance to clients by referring and connecting them to relevant services and organizations; and 6. Special Projects like the Disability Connection Community Playground
, Harrison County’s first fully accessible playground, and the community calendar
offer additional recreational opportunities, information, and community engagement.
