Edmond Boudreaux, Historian

Two Canadian brothers of French descent, Pierre LeMoyne, Sieur d’Iberville, and Jean Baptiste LeMoyne, Sieur de Bienville, landed at Ship Island and Biloxi Bay. Here in 1699 they began a settlement on the shore of Biloxi Bay, in order to be near the deep-water harbor of Ship Island.  The Ship Island anchorage was important to the French because it served as a base from which they could guard the mouth of the Mississippi River.
